  • The Confucius Institute opened in 2009 and was based at the University of Liverpool.
  • It is a focal point for all China-related activity in Liverpool and across Merseyside, working closely with schools and colleges, local businesses, community groups and individuals to promote Chinese language and culture.
  • As this was a newly formed department, I set up all office procedures from scratch.
  • I devised processes to record student information and financial transactions, organised the programme of courses and supervised a team of 6 staff.
  • I was also responsible for providing periodic feedback reports to Chinese funding body and was the key contact for the department dealing with all enquiries to the department.
  • I list below a description of duties and responsibilities and my duties constantly changed throughout my tenure with the Institute and I took on board all aspects of work to ensure the smooth running of the Institute.
  • Supervision of staff.
  • Reception and general day to day office duties.
  • Providing a bespoke clerical and secretarial support to both Head of Department and Deputy Directors.
  • Processing all financial transactions through large financial database.
  • Scheduling and servicing staff meetings.
  • Acting as key contact to the Institute, responding to e-mail queries and telephone calls.
  • General day to day office duties.
  • Record keeping and data cleansing.
  • Providing feedback for audit reports and for end of year accounts to Hanban (our funding partners).
  • Collaborating with internal and external colleagues and institutions.
  • Arranging travel and accommodation for deputy directors.
  • Arranging the annual programme of Chinese themed projects and events Throughout my working career at the University, I have regularly attended 'in house' training courses and participated in mandatory training for university systems such as AGRESSO (university finance software), TULIP (The University of Liverpool Information Portal) and SPIDER (Student database) and all optional refresher courses.
