Dear Alicia,

As someone who regularly checks the retail careers section of the Lidl website, I was delighted to find an opening for a customer assistant at the Lidl Salisbury store. Having over 3 years’ experience in customer service, I am no stranger to working in fast-paced environments, serving as many as an average of 16 customers per hour during busy shifts.

While working as a customer assistant with Adil, I especially appreciated the fact that our priorities were constantly changing as we—as a team—were always adapting to and kept busy with a variety of tasks. I frequently unpacked at least 5 pallets of stock when deliveries arrived in store. I often helped as many as 20 customers each day with questions and queries, including helping them locate items around the store as I tidied up our shelves and checked sell-by dates. I found working in the bakery especially rewarding and used a simple tally system to track and anticipate sales on an hourly basis, keeping the average bakery item 6 hours fresher and reducing wastage by over 10% overall.

The variety that Lidl offers in the day-to-day work of a customer assistant very much appeals to me and, as you can see, I have a proven track record in both customer service and deliveries as well as in-store bakery experience.

Thank you for your consideration of my application. I look forward to the next stage of the recruitment process and to the phone interview beyond that.

Yours Sincerely,

Francesca Whitehead

Here’s how to write a cover letter for Lidl:

1. Set the header of your cover letter for Lidl out properly

The overall shape and layout of your cover letter for a Lidl job will be fixed by the standard UK business letter format. This format has very specific rules for setting out your letter, including the header, in which you’ll put your contact details as the sender and the recruiter’s details as the addressee.

Start  the top of the page and align to the right your full name, postal address, email address, and mobile number. Leave a line and type out the date of writing in the form 3rd May 2021. Then, leave another line and align to the left the recruiter’s name, their job title at Lidl, their Lidl store, and the address.

2. Choose a good salutation to start your cover letter for Lidl

How you start your cover letter for a Lidl job—the salutation you use—will tell the recruiter a lot about your ability to choose an appropriate tone when talking to customers, for example. The greeting you use here should also be friendly and professional, even if a little more on the formal side.

Your best bet is generally going to be ‘Dear + first name’. The exceptions here are if you’re particularly young or if you suspect there might be a significant gap in seniority and/or age between you and the recruiter. In such cases, it’s best to go with ‘Dear + title + surname’. Always use ‘Ms’ for women.

The downside to using titles like ‘Ms’ and ‘Mr’ is that they’re gendered, meaning that you have to be well and truly certain as to the recruiter’s sex. This sounds like an unlikely problem, but many names can leave you guessing. So double check by visiting the Lidl website and checking Microsoft’s LinkedIn.

If you really can’t be sure of a recruiter’s sex and don’t feel comfortable starting off on a first-name basis, then use ‘Dear + first name + surname’ instead. But what if you can’t even put a name to the recruiter’s role? This happens quite often with Lidl’s online application process. The short answer is: find out.

You’ll sometimes be able to find out who is responsible for recruiting new Lidl employees by clicking around on the relevant Lidl webpages. LinkedIn is an option if you have any hints you can feed into its search engine. An absolutely sure-fire approach is to simply call the store in question and ask.

How to address a cover letter if you don’t know the recruiter’s name? If you can’t find out who the recruiter in your case will be (in spite of having called up and asked), you should address your Lidl cover letter to the most likely job title of the recruiter. This is usually going to be the store manager, especially if your cover letter is for a customer assistant.

Be as specific as possible in such cases. For example, ‘Dear Tweedleigh Store Manager’. If you can’t find a job title for your recruiter, then address your cover letter to the recruiter’s function, for example ‘Dear Lidl Hiring Manager’. Whatever you do, avoid the cliché ‘To Whom It May Concern’ and ‘Dear Sir/Madame’.

Dear Alicia,

3. Grab the recruiter’s attention from the outset of your cover letter for Lidl

We all know the importance of first impressions, make sure you make a good one on Lidl recruiters with an opening paragraph that really grabs their attention. Use your opening paragraph to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role, show what you can bring to the role, and that you’re a great fit to the Lidl team.

Introduce yourself and start making your case by presenting one of your more impressive on-the-job achievements. An achievement is just a description of your actions at work and the benefits that you brought to your employer through those actions. Achievements are measurable and concrete.

The actions that give rise to an achievement are most often taken in response to a challenge or problem at work, but they need not be. You should always be able to put numbers to your achievements, ideally to the benefits you brought to your employer first and foremost and at least to the scale at which you acted.

Use something like the STAR method to structure your achievement, keeping it at one sentence if at all possible, and at no more than two. If it isn’t already obvious, explain how you can apply those same skills at Lidl. Explain how your goals line up with Lidl’s goals by describing what you want to achieve for Lidl. Show motivation in your letter.

What if you don’t have any relevant work experience? Look to your studies and any volunteer, placement, and internship work you’ve done for applicable achievements. Include a belief statement in which you explain why you’re a great match for Lidl’s claimed values and way of working (see the Lidl website).

Whether experienced or not, if you were referred to the role, now is definitely the time to mention it. People sometimes shy away from mentioning the fact that someone referred them to a job, but far from being something you should play down, it’s considered a plus for both you and Lidl, so drop names here.

Your whole job application, including your cover letter, may well be parsed by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) before a human being even lays eyes on it. Give yourself the best possible chance of getting past its algorithms by mentioning the Lidl store and job title as they appear in the advert.

There’s certainly a lot happening in this opening paragraph, but most of it will happen by itself if you just focus on showing your enthusiasm for the role, on what you can bring to Lidl, and on why you’re a good match for the Lidl team. This paragraph is going to be extremely short—40–80 words.

4. Use your cover letter for Lidl to showcase your achievements

Even though this is going to be the main part of your cover letter, there’s really not much to it once you’ve written your opening paragraph. The main body paragraph(s) of your cover letter will be a showcase of your achievements. String together 2–3 achievements like the one you used in your opening.

Add just enough information and explanation to knit your achievements into a coherent whole. Break this main part of your cover letter down into two paragraphs if you feel that a single paragraph would make for too big a chunk of text. Use bullet points to further break your paragraph(s) down, if necessary.

Keep this section down at 120–200 words.

5. Wrap up your cover letter for Lidl and end on a bold CTA

Depending on what kind of experience you referred to in the main body paragraph(s) of your cover letter and how directly and obviously relevant it is to working at Lidl, you might have some connections to draw or loose ends to wrap up. Now is the time to do just that. But don’t state the obvious or repeat yourself.

Take 40–60 words to summarise your achievements and tie them back into benefits for Lidl (if necessary). Then take a few words to thank the recruiter for the time and energy they’re investing in considering your application. It never hurts to have good manners, but the benefits can extend beyond that.

End your cover letter for a Lidl job with a confident call to action (CTA) through which you show your eagerness to continue on to the next step of the recruitment process. This is unlikely to be a phone interview but it’s still worthwhile mentioning that you’re available at the recruiter’s convenience.

6. Sign off from your cover letter for Lidl the right way

Some of the tasks you might perform at a Lidl store will be fairly simple and straightforward, and yet clearly not everyone is able to do them well, if at all. A simple and straightforward task is easy to get wrong if you don’t pay attention to the details or follow instructions. Show you’ve got what it takes.

Signing off from your Lidl cover letter is just a matter of sticking to a formula. Use ‘Yours Sincerely’ if you addressed your cover letter someone by name and use ‘Yours Faithfully’ if you weren’t able to find the recruiter’s name and used something like ‘Dear Store Manager’ instead.

7. Keep these tips in mind before sending in your cover letter for Lidl

Displaying good attention to detail is important if you want to work at Lidl. Just as keeping yourself looking neat and tidy says something about how neat and tidy you’ll keep the store, how you present your retail cover letter says a lot about how you’ll do that job once you get it.

How long can a cover letter be? If you followed this guide, then you should have ended up with 250–400 words, give or take. Your cover letter should be short nicely filling a single A4 page, never more. ‘Nicely filling’ means that you’ve used plenty of white space to separate out paragraphs and sections while leaving margins unchanged.

Choosing the right font goes a very long way towards making your cover letter look professional. Go with something subtle like Noto, Garamond, Liberation, Arial or Calibri. When in doubt, stick with the default font. Keep the font size at a readable 11–12 points. Leave the font colour black and the typeface regular.

Remember that your cover letter for Lidl is only one part of your whole job application, the most notable other part being your shop assistant CV. These two documents constitute a single application together and their overall look and setting out should reflect this fact. So match the font, layout, and any colours you use. Use a basic template without fancy graphics to enhance readability.

Always save your retail CV and cover letter in PDF unless you’ve been explicitly asked for something else. PDF will help preserve all the effort you’ve put into getting your cover letter formatting and layout just right. Formats like *.docx are notoriously unstable and what looks great on your computer might not be legible on someone else’s. If you want a perfect cover letter, you should definitely choose a PDF format.

A cover letter alone simply won’t be enough—you need an impactful CV, too. Create your CV in minutes. Just follow our wizard and fill in every CV section with ready-made content. Get started by choosing a professional CV template.
