I am a third year Journalism student about to graduate from the University of Portsmouth. I have had work experience at a range of different news outlets and had published work from all of them. During my time at both university and in the working world, I have developed a wide range of journalistic skills which would benefit your company immensely.
I worked directly with the editor of Exeter Living, one of the magazines of the chain, to write and publish pieces for her. I conducted interviews and transcribed them to write into a feature, and wrote a review. Both were published as double page spreads. I also edited my own work, created my own questions, and used shorthand whilst completing the interview. Lastly, I regularly used Indesign to create layouts and spreads for a variety of the magazines in the company. I gained a lot of knowledge at this work experience which I believe I could apply to future jobs.
As part of the lifestyle team, I had to scour the news and internet to find interesting and edgy stories that would appeal to a certain clientele. I had to write pieces on a weekly basis to a strict deadline, and also had to edit the work of my colleagues and ensure they would meet their deadlines. I was given a lot of responsibility in this position as I had to make sure all of the stories of the team were of a high enough quality to be printed online.
My role at Vulture Hound was to write pieces towards the music section of the online news outlet. This was on a bi-weekly basis, which meant I had to meet constant deadlines which I thrived on. This opportunity led me to travel to a variety of different gigs in London, including The Pierces and Lorde. I enjoyed this role immensely as I had to write opinion pieces and features on a regular basis.
I worked personally with the editor of Voix Magazine to develop the presentation and quality of the beauty section. This improved my web design skills and my eye for a good layout. The changes I made to the website brought in more visitors to the site and more attention to the articles.
I took on the role of contributing towards the gathering and writing of the news as it happened. My responsibilities were to call news sources and find stories, write up the information, and edit what I had done ready for publishing. At 17 years old, I had a wide range of my articles and news stories published in the newspaper. I also edited the pieces of my colleagues and doubled checked all of their information and sources to ensure it was entirely accurate. As a teenager, I took a lot of responsibility in these roles and I believe I rose to the challenge fully.
I am currently studying Journalism at university, which has given me a wide range of knowledge and skills. I have achieved 110wpm NCTJ Shorthand, NCTJ Reporting, NCTJ Media Law, along with others. I am now also competent at Adobe Indesign and Premiere.
At school I received an A in Sociology, B in English and a B in Psychology. As my school is a language college, I also learnt French, Spanish and Italian to a conversational level.
I am currently part of my university netball team, where we train weekly, take part in tournaments, and socialise together. Being part of netball has taught me how to think as part of a team, and how to help other people develop their skills whilst taking on advice about to improve my own.
I am also a very avid walker and runner; I usually do distances up to 10k at least three times a week. I think this shows that I have a strong sense of dedication and commitment, and also am always trying to self-improve. It also shows that I am a very active person that wants to get involved with anything I can help with.
Lastly, I am very interested in beauty, fashion and lifestyle tips. I buy magazines weekly to look at new products and fashion trends. I have had this interest since I was little and it has only grown stronger with age. I love to write about all of these areas, so I might able to help others.
I have NCTJ 110wpm Shorthand, am very experiences in Adobe Indesign and Premiere and can use all officeware such as Word and Excel.
I also have a range of NCTJ qualifications in Media Law, Reporting, Court Reporting and Public Affairs These show that I have a well-rounded grasp of a wide variety of aspects of journalism.
I can speak a variety of different languages conversationally from school, including Spanish, French and Italian.
