I am a Registered Sick Children's Nurse and qualified in 1991. I spent 20 years as a Peri-operative practitioner in the operating theatres at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, I then worked for two years as the Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist for Gastroenterology and most recently I am employed by Aberdeenshire council at Mackie Academy as the First Aid administrator for the school.
I have developed the role of First Aid administrator at Mackie academy. I attend to all the children and staff members who require First Aid or are feeling unwell. I asses the children when they are unwell and care for them until they can be picked up to go home. I am in charge of all emergency medication in the school and have implemented a new system for emergency medication for children requiring Anaphylaxis medication, asthmatic medication and Diabetic medication. I provide anaphylaxis training in the school setting.
I am also in charge of the controlled drug medication for ADHD pupils and I am responsible for adminstering and correct recording of these drugs.
I update the health care records for all pupils on the school computer system.
I offer support to children with health care needs in the school and maintain links with their families as to how best help them cope with their illness in the school setting.
I am responsible for all the First Aid equipment in the school and ensure that all equipment is fully stocked and maintained.
I work closely with guidance staff and the school nurse reporting accordingly any concerns that I may have regarding pupils.
I have ensured that strict procedures are in place for all aspects of First Aid in the school.
I work as a Bank Nurse at Royal Aberdeen Children's hospital covering all areas of the Hospital including Ward and Theatre Nursing.
I provided a specialist service for this client group of patients and their families offering specialist care and support for children suffering from Crohn's disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Gastrostomy care and Liver Disease. I ran specialist clinics in this area and provided outreach clinics in Shetland and Elgin. I provided specialist care and administered specific medication in the hospital setting whilst supporting children and families through their illness from diagnosis through to transition to Adult services. I monitored the children's health and reported to the Gastroenterology consultants. Pre and post operative care was given and I was the first port of call for the child and their family supporting them in their health care needs by providing education and information on their condition and medication. I worked closely with the multidisciplinary team and other health professionals to ensure the highest standard of care for my patients.
I worked in theatres as a multi skilled practitioner encompassing Scrub/ Circulating, Anaesthetics and Recovery and provided outreach services at the Neonatal Unit, MRI and CT scans. I worked in all specialities which included General Surgery, Ear Nose and Throat, Orthopaedics, Eyes, Plastics, Maxilla Facial, Endoscopy, General Anaesthetic Dental. Special Need Adult Dental lists and Emergency trauma.
I studied Anaesthetic Nursing at Robert Gordon University and gained my Anaesthetic Nursing Certificate which allowed me to be an accredited Anaesthetic Assistant.
I worked at a senior level and frequently took charge of the department in the seniors absence, coordinating the day to day running of the theatre team. I was highly involved in training and mentored new staff and students.
